Wednesday MM

Good Morning!

Faculty Meeting today with a tentative agenda of:
Karon Kiger with curriculum updates.
Tanya Lovin with TEAM updates.
Joel Mayo with Colonial Life Supplemental insurance.

Looking forward to seeing all of you there!

We had another good event last night with our 3rd and 5th grade families. Thanks for making yourselves available for our parents. When we work together, we can help our students reach new heights.

Keep the daily schedules coming. I appreciate all the effort in maximizing time for student learning. The following is taken from a WSFCS document called "Essentials for all schools." Please look it over and compare the standards set by our district to your schedule.

English Language Arts / Literacy
Provide 2.5 hours for literacy instruction following recommendation of the prioritized curriculum with emphasis on the acquisition of decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. A balanced literacy model includes: Working with Words, Shared/Teacher Directed Reading, Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, and Writing instruction.

Provide 90 minutes of daily math instruction; employ instructional strategies identified in WS/FCS Best Practices in K-5 Mathematics Classrooms Checklist; incorporate use of Week by Week Essentials, Indicators, and Strategies for Instruction in Mathematics to supplement basal program; integrate problem solving and real world applications through collaborative groups; and consistently use technology (calculators, etc.) to deepen mathematical understanding.

Daily science instruction (minimum of 30 minutes/day) utilizing inquiry-based instruction and classroom activities that increase science literacy. Use district and DPI lessons/resources. Participate in quarterly goal review sessions.

Social Studies
Provide regular social studies instruction to develop comprehension skills using High Yield strategies with factual texts and graphic information.
